Sonnie and Will's climb is impressive, but it's worth looking back to the life and climbs of John Ewbank, who did the first ascent of the route they freed.

An amazing man, and a brilliant and perceptive writer. His long discussion of what it means to be a climber is here.

Great read Ghost! Love a lot of his John Long'isms and little interesting word snippets like this one
"What’s wrong with leaving the guidebook in the bag? Give yourself a thrill! Bring back “the four Fs,” as I and my old mate Alec Campbell used to recite to each other: “Fail on it, Fall on it, or Fly up the F*#ker.”"

Great photography for sure on the vid. Bad ass totem pole too. Curious how many times did they toprope it before they led it? Said they were there for 2.5 weeks.

Here's a great Sonnie working it shot. Thing looks so thin.

What more can one say? I also loved to compare this with the now 'old' Cobra Crack video.
Also now that I think about it, there is a very fine video of a climb called Dream Catcher. Where S. Trotter is also featured.

Awe ghost! Such a knowledgeable climber,
a climber with a real appreciation for the way it had to be ~ to get it done only a few decades ago.

What other interesting subjects are you a master of?
I'm at a loss for the need to go off on the politards threads, when such members of this forum have such depth of climbing knowledge.

Fine achievement by Sonnie Trotter.

Some here have mentioned the impact John Ewbank had on Australian rock climbing, and what a unique individual he was. I was fortunate to climb with Ewbank while on leave from Vietnam, in 1968-69, and later in New Hampshire, after he moved to NYC.
Many do not know that Ewbank was orphaned at a young age, and emigrated from the UK, with little or no support. He was an amazing guy who was gifted in so many ways, and told me many times that his music was far more important to him than the climbing.
Just a year before his death, and quite out of shape, he styled a few 5.10's on Cathedral Ledge, in NH. He was a natural climber, and I was fortunate to know him.
Here is a photo of Ewbank, on one of his routes, Genesis, which I took in 1968, the same year he did the 1st ascent of the Totem Pole.

Just for the record the it wasn't a FFA, it was freed by some locals a few years ago. I don't think Trotter is claiming it either but that's the title of the video for some reason.
